この論文でインターネット依存は、病的インターネット利用(Pathological Internet Use: PIU) という用語が使われている。

概要

75%の論文が病的インターネット利用とうつ病、57%が不安、100%がADHDの症状、60%が強迫性障害の症状、66%が敵意/攻撃性との有意な相関を報告していた。病的インターネット利用と社会恐怖症との関連を報告した研究はなかった。大多数の研究では、女性よりも男性の方がPIUの発症率が高いと報告されている。最も強い相関関係が観察されたのはうつ病であり、最も弱い相関関係は敵意/攻撃性であった。

11件の研究[63, 65-67, 69, 70, 72, 75-78]では、男性の有病率が有意に高かった。 3件の研究[68, 71, 74]では、有意な性差は認められなかった。 女性のPIU率が高いと報告した研究はなかった。

地域

アジアでは、PIUとうつ病ADHDの症状、不安、強迫症状との関連性に関する4つの研究[68, 76 -78]で大きな効果の大きさが観察された。 すべてのヨーロッパの研究では、PIUと相関のあるうつ病[63, 80]、不安、強迫症状[69]との間に大きな効果があった。米国の研究では、PIUとうつ病の間の効果の大きさが小さいことが報告されている [71] 。
